Today, at the end, i met again with Roger, Madcap Records Collective Chief, and I could have a good long talk about (and with) the Collective. Before keep on writing, let’s have a summary of Madcap Collective story so far.
This small new indie label has been working since February/march 2003, proposing different ways to play and record music. Starting from the first three productions "Father Murphy", "Littlebrown" and "Oswald", Madcap Records also produced soundtracks for short movies, installations, plays, readings… and it supports the new pristine "St.Louis & Lawrence books" that published limited edition of short-novels, routines and fragments by Italian young writers.
Freddie of F. Murphy and Vittorio Demarin (also part of the Collective with his solo-project) are right now touring Italy with a sonic reading, and with Chiara Lee they just signed up a deal to perform a song for the short-movie "The message" produce by Still at Large Company, New York. At the same time Oswald is recording another soundtrack, for an Italian independent short movie.
Madcap Records last release is "Madcap Records Collective compilation number two" that presents a track list including all the Madcap productions and co-productions (the one-man-band Littlebrown, the couple/small circle of friends Father Murphy, the combo Oswald, the solo projects Vittorio Demarin and Princesa; the last to join Madcap: Basement, from Italy, and Umberto from Luxembourg) and bands/artists such as Joie D.B.G., Dead Blonde Girlfriend, Fuck, Franklin Delano, and Yuppie Flu.
The "Compilation number two" has been released thanks to the cooperation with Insideout Rechords, The fevered brain of RadioMike from New York, and Homesleep Records from Bologna, Italy.
The release party took place February 28th in New York, during the Antifolk Winter Festival, and in Bologna March 6th, at the Sesto Senso Club.
A small promotional tour is scheduled ‘til late may, including gigs in Siena, Venezia, Treviso, Udine, Paris and Luxembourg (west Europe tour is been post scheduled later in summer).
Talking about live shows, Roger also spent lot of words speaking about the Madcap Project, an only-live band, featuring members of all the MDCP projects, that arranges madcap songs in an alt-country way.
While dining, some protagonists of this Collective came and sat down at our table, weird people closer to an elf than an human being.
I came out with my idea of a creative interview, but Freddie of Father Murphy proposed to rid of any old idea of questions and answers, instead of getting free to present theirself with fairy tales or anecdotes.
First, I got puzzled, than I got ready to copy and paste all the phrases, kind of cut-ups.
The following stories come directly from the fantasy of Madcap Collective people, giving to everybody who reeds the opportunity to get closer to their "butterflies and bats" world.
Here we are: Father Murphy starts…
Few months ago, I was fishing with my little brother Keith, when a bad dressed man came close to me:
"I’ve something for you!"
In a weird way he had found an old yellow document, another legend about Father Murphy, and now he was asking me to pay for it. Sometimes money can be usefull, I thought, and here it is the short story:
Reverend Murphy was born New York, Brooklin, undreds years ago in a hot hot summer.
He had one son and a daughter: Freddie Murphy and Chiara Lee. They chose 2 different ways: the little Lee went to China, while Freddie was stuck in Brooklyn.
They kept on touch for a while, till both felt asleep for many years.
Four years ago, they met again in Venice, and here we are: it was born Father Murphy.
F.Murphy is a couple, a duo, a no band, a small circle of friends.
With bishop Vittorio Demarin they started playing and recording between Brooklyn and Venice, then they moved to Berlin.
Back in Venice, Freddie started his solo project working on texts and readings, presenting live shows all over Italy and abroad, always cooperating with Chiara and Vittorio.
Right now Father Murphy is working on his second album, "When I was a young man the world wasn’t in your hands"; it will come out next summer for Madcap Records Collective, thanks also to the help of two altar boys, Oswald and Daniel.
Here are some informations we got during all these years about F.Murphy live shows ( I know for sure there are many others set up for f.m. during live shows, the following ones are those I saw…)
-Duo: Freddie guitar, voice, kazoo
Chiara voice, organ, cymbals
-Trio: duo plus Vittorio violin, glockenspiel, mini drumset, samples and toys.
-Full Circle of friends: Trio plus altar boy Daniel drumset, harmonium, altar boy Oswlad electric guitar, choir
Next step: Littlebrown
Littlebrown was born in the year 2000, made out by daddy Paolo and mummy Moretti.
Since he was a kid, he showed great interest in music, even if it looked like music was more interested in something else.
It was just because of his early love disappointment that Littlebrown's personality started to mutate.
His huge love for toast and for a woman, pushed him to write down the first song, which took him back closer to music: "I need only a toast".
From here on, various improvisation and new approches to instruments, different inspirations from his father, new situations and friends, made him compose two more songs: "Kiss 1" and "Kiss 2".
His childhood' sfunniest game was about to become a big deal.
It took 16 years to his father to get close to music, just 6 months to him. A real freak.
Littlebrown started to record the songs he had been writing, then he released his first album, written, thought, recorded, produced advertised by himself, in 2002: "some (flying) kisses from a (ground) guitar" then licensed by Madcap Records Collective
And then time for live shows came up, therefor he had to find the way to take his music from the CD out to the stage.
A friend he had recently met and who was just two years old gave him a big hand. Zoom Drumachine was the man who gave him the chance to play gigs.
The 11th of January 2003 he played live for the first time at Corona del Re in Tarzo.
Zoom Drumachine had such an electric drum's precision that Littlebrown was seriously put to the test. He had never played gigs before, at least not in that life.
Then it was Oswald time, but the kid just looked at me, without saying anything. A friend of him, Danny Sinclair, stood up and started speacking loud:
"Oswald likes to say he’s a music project, 3 pieces on electric shows and recording sessions…wide open to any kind of cooperation…but everything is under the direction of Andrea Rottin…Next step for Oswald will be playing some Satie stuff in a surf way…then they will think of how to shake analog and digital up…god is the answer…and Oswald wants just to say he didn’t kill anyone…
I got puzzled again, so Vittorio came out with few words:
"I really got to be a storyteller now.For absent friends.6 friends in a house,
six friends playing in their bedrooms, seriously for fun.well, one of them, the one in swimmingpool, disappeared on sunday. His name was E.Shappire.He invented a curious engine to write and perform his music and this item disappeared with his creator. Now I'm here to tell you how the other friends tried to find him and how Francisco, the chosen one, wore an adult suit and left the house to search for his once friend and master E,following the engine's incoherent music, traveling trough crazy villages , meeting bizzarre creatures and fellows, dancing and thrilling by the way.His journey aws very long and you will see and hear only a brief part of Francisco's odissey, but there's one thing I can tell you for sure, there was always someone dressed in a yellow cabinet."
After all, I thought I was kind of blowing up, but at least my satisfaction was satisfied, isn’t it satisfaction satisfied a poetical way to say something?
The only problem, I couldn’t think of any way to finish this weird interview, so all the Collective started screaming: PRINCESA…
And he came, slowly, he sat down at our table, and with sunny eyes he said:
"man, it’s not art, it’s just something you can say in a different way…why a Collective? Everybody here plays different roles, with Roger as master, but not as master of puppets…try it as medicine, but not as pills…"
That’s all folks!...God speed you, so long. |
