In the words of Luca Beatrice, Zeni’s painting is fully in line with recent investigations in
contemporary art, understood in essence to be a form of relationship:

Zeni’s painting is [...] a “form of relationship”, one which is capable of establishing, as with
other contemporary languages, connections and systems, finding completion by means of an
“active” intervention on the part both of the spectator and the object represented.

At the basis of Zeni’s pictorial research lies the skilled use of photography: the artist captures
people in the act of performing daily, and thus anti-rhetorical and undifferentiated, tasks
which, as such, succeed in simply revealing the act of existence. Painting, in this way, finds its
foundations in the conceptual art that has made of photography a space of relationship and
documentation of the traces of human presence (from Vito Acconci to Franceso Jodice to Beat
Streuli).

With this matrix as a starting point, Zeni works until he has transformed the text that is the
painting into a synthetic language, one characterized by the anti-descriptivity of the white
background, which the spectator must needs come into relationship with. Zeni’s painting, there
where it attempts to separate itself from a merely contemplative function, becomes a
challenge to the medium of painting itself, that is, the necessity of painting to make itself
dynamic and active.

For the Bird’s eye project, Zeni undertakes a deeper exploration of the contours of his
genuinely unique poetics, developing the verticalism of his vision from a new perspective: from
a bird’s eye view.


Corrado Zeni was born in 1967 in Genoa, where he lives and works.
In 2003, he was amongst the finalists for the Cairo Award; the following year (2004), he participated in
the Anteprima (Preview) of Rome’s XIV Quadriennale, and exhibited at the Mart of Rovereto. In 2007
he was featured in the exhibition Nuovi pittori della realtà (New Painters of Reality) at the Pac in Milan,
as well as in the exhibition Linee all’orizzonte (Lines to the Horizon) at Genoa’s Gallery of Modern Art.

personale di Corrado Zeni a Milano.

Secondo le parole di Luca Beatrice, la pittura di Zeni è pienamente allineata alle recenti
ricerche dell’arte contemporanea nella suo essere intesa come forma di relazione:

La pittura di Zeni è […] “forma di relazione”, in grado di stabilire, al pari di altri linguaggi
contemporanei, connessioni e sistemi, completandosi per mezzo dell’intervento “attivo” sia
dello spettatore sia dell’oggetto rappresentato.

Alla base della ricerca pittorica di Zeni, c’è un uso sapiente del mezzo fotografico: l’artista
cattura le persone nell’atto di compiere gesti quotidiani e quindi antiretorici, indifferenziati, che
in quanto tali, sono semplicemente rivelatori dell’atto di esistenza. In questo modo la pittura
trova i suoi fondamenti in quell’arte concettuale che ha fatto della fotografia uno spazio di
relazione e di documentazione di tracce e presenze umane (da Vito Acconci, a Francesco
Jodice, a Beat Streuli).

A partire da questa matrice Zeni lavora sino a trasformare il testo costituito dal quadro in un
linguaggio sintetico, caratterizzato dall’antidescrittività del fondo bianco, con il quale lo
spettatore deve necessariamente relazionarsi. La pittura di Zeni, laddove tenta di svincolarsi
dalla funzione meramente contemplativa, si pone come una sfida che riguarda il medium della
pittura in generale: ossia la necessità della pittura di farsi dinamica e attiva.

Per il progetto Bird’s eye, Zeni approfondisce le caratteristiche di una poetica del tutto
peculiare, sviluppando il verticalismo della visione in una nuova prospettiva a volo d’uccello.


Corrado Zeni è nato nel 1967 a Genova, dove vive e lavora.
Nel 2003 è incluso tra i finalisti del Premio Cairo; l’anno seguente (2004) partecipa all’Anteprima della
XIV Quadriennale di Roma, ed espone al Mart di Rovereto. Nel 2007 è inserito nella mostra Nuovi
pittori della realtà al Pac di Milano, e nella mostra Linee all’orizzonte alla Galleria d’Arte Moderna di
Genova.
