HUMAN RIGHTS OPINION COLUMN
With hitherto unscreened films, debates and solidarity actions, the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) is an opportunity for commitment open to all. An annual event in Geneva, international capital of human rights, its aim – in relation to the UN Human Rights Council – is to serve as an “opinion column” or space where ideas are freely expressed and shared. A platform for dialogue between human rights activists, film-makers and members of civil society, the FIFDH fearlessly denounces attacks on human dignity.

AN OPINION COLUMN VIS A VIS THE UN – FILMS TO COMBAT INDIFFERENCE MOBILIZING DEBATES
Seventh edition of the FIFDH, seven separate topics among others to denounce human rights violations: Georgia, where the population is made to suffer for Russia’s geo-strategic and petroleum interests. Bosnia, bogged down in a dangerous process of ethnicization. Algeria, gagged by a totalitarian regime that is getting ready for new sham elections. Freedom of expression, reinterpreted by fundamentalisms and negationnisms. Women, who struggle everywhere, including Africa, for their dignity and rights. Illegal immigrants, exploited and ostracized. Globalization, challenged by Nobel prize-winner Joseph Stiglitz who will present Jacques Sarasin’s film “The world according to Stiglitz” at its world première.

Other world premières include Christian Zerbib’s “En terre étrangère” and Patti Duncan and Skye Fitzgerald’s “Finding face”. Remarkable for their originality and artistic quality are the creative documentaries: “Kassim the Dream”, about a Ugandan child soldier who exorcises his experience of violence in the boxing rings of North America; “The Choir” that has South African prisoners really swinging; “To make an example” on the death penalty in Turkey; “Brides of Allah”, that describes the life and state of mind of Palestinian activists in an Israeli prison; and “Yodok stories” that shoots scenes from life in North Korean labour camps.

THE INTERNATIONAL JURY
Louise Arbour, UN High Commissioner for Human rights from 2004 to 2008, French actor and film-maker Mathieu Kassovitz, international reporter and author Florence Aubenas, Burkina Faso script-writer and film director Idrissa Ouédraogo, and Algerian playwright Slimane Benaïssa will present the FIFDH award sponsored by the State of Geneva to the winner of the “Creative Documentary Films” competition and the OMCT award to the winner of the “Big Reports” competition.

Joseph Stiglitz, winner of the 2001 Nobel Economy Prize, Kyung-wha Kang, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Micheline Calmy-Rey, Swiss Federal Councillor, Stéphane Hessel, co-drafter of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Francesco Rutelli, Italian Senator and former Minister of the Environment, Leila Shahid, Palestinian Authority delegate in France, Elie Barnavi, Israeli historian and member of the « Peace Now » movement, Rony Brauman, former President of Médecins sans Frontières, Hocine Aït Ahmed, member of the Algerian opposition, Bernard Bertossa, former public Prosecutor of the Canton of Geneva, Jovan Divjak, a Bosnian general from Serbia who defended Sarajevo, Abderrahmane Sissako, Mali film director and producer, French actor Charles Berling, French film director Patrice Leconte, and Algerian author Selima Ghezali.

- Exhibition: « A l’épreuve du monde» The Universal Declaration of Human Rights 60 years after its signature, with the French Mission to the UN.
- Reading : « L’Amour sans papiers » by Slimane Benaïssa, performed by Slimane Benaïssa and Massia Kaneman-Pougatch, Wednesday 11 March.
- Music: a concert by Arab-Andalusian singer Sapho, Friday 13 March.
- Solidarity with illegal immigrants evening, Saturday 14 March.

TRIBUTE TO HU JIA
This year the festival pays tribute to Hu Jia, an imprisoned Chinese dissident, winner of the 2008 Sakharov Peace Prize.

UNE TRIBUNE LIBRE FACE A L’ONU
DES FILMS CONTRE L’INDIFFERENCE
DES DEBATS POUR SE MOBILISER

Depuis sa création, le Festival est fondé sur le concept “Un film, un sujet, un débat” et poursuit à travers cette formule l’objectif de dénoncer sans complaisance les violations des droits humains. Au programme de la septième édition : des films inédits sur le 60ème anniversaire des Conventions de Genève, la Géorgie, la Bosnie, l’Algérie, Gaza, la liberté d’expression, les droits des femmes, l’extrême pauvreté, Stiglitz et sa vision du monde, la corruption, le droit à un environnement sain, la régularisation des sans-papiers, citoyens sous surveillance privée et l’interventionnisme humanitaire.

Le festival 2009 est dédié au dissident chinois emprisonné Hu Jia, prix Sakharov des droits humains 2008.

7ème édition du FIFDH, sept thématiques parmi d’autres, pour dénoncer les violations des droits humains :
La Géorgie où les populations paient les ambitions géostratégiques et pétrolières de la Russie. La Bosnie enlisée dans un dangereux processus d’ethnicisation. L’Algérie bâillonnée par un régime totalitaire qui s’apprête à vivre un nouveau simulacre d’élections. La liberté d’expression, réinterprétée par les Etats, les intégrismes et les négationnismes. Les femmes qui se battent partout et en particulier en Afrique pour leur dignité et leurs droits. Les sans-papiers, exploités et ostracisés. La globalisation remise en cause par le prix Nobel Joseph Stiglitz qui viendra présenter, en première mondiale, le film de Jacques Sarasin : « Le monde selon Stiglitz ».

Autres Premières mondiales, le film de Chistian Zerbib « En terre étrangère» et « Finding face », de Patti Duncan et Skye Fitzgerald. A noter également pour leur originalité et leurs qualités artistiques les documentaires de création: « Kassim the Dream », l’enfant soldat ougandais qui exorcise les violences qu’il a subies sur les rings américains. «The Choir», qui fait swinguer les prisonniers sud-africains, « To make an example» sur la peine de mort en Turquie, « Brides of Allah » qui décrit la vie et l’état d’esprit de militantes palestiniennes dans une prison israélienne et « Yodok stories » où la vie dans les camps de travail nord-coréens est mise en scène.

Louise Arbour, Haut-commissaire de l’ONU aux droits de l’homme, de 2004 à 2008, Mathieu Kassovitz, comédien et cinéaste français, Florence Aubenas, grand-reporter et écrivaine, Idrissa Ouédraogo, scénariste et réalisateur burkinabé et le dramaturge algérien Slimane Benaïssa décerneront le Grand Prix FIFDH, offert
par l'Etat de Genève pour la compétition « Documentaires de Création » et le Prix de l’Organisation Mondiale Contre la Torture (OMCT) pour la compétition « Grands Reportages ».

LE PROGRAMME PEDAGOGIQUE
10 films et un concours pour sensibiliser les jeunes aux questions des droits de l’homme et un prix attribué par le Jury des jeunes, à un Documentaire de Création en compétition au FIFDH.
