What is music? This is a question every music lover will answer differently. MaerzMusik is a direct reaction to new relations between sound and society today. The festival for contemporary music transcends the borders between tradition and innovation. With its broad range of orchestral and chamber music, innovative musical theatre, experimental works and media art it provides a fascinating and rich panorama of contemporary music.
Established artists and young newcomers from all over the world come to Berlin each March to present a full programme with many world premières and new productions, many of which are commissioned by MaerzMusik. Each year there are thematic focuses, and the festival concentrates on music from specific regions. The popular night-time performances in the “Sonic Arts Lounge” present unusual formats and the newest trends in technical sound and image production. MaerzMusik stands for openness – and this is the festival’s recipe for success. Within just a few years MaerzMusik has gained an unusually large audience, keen to enter on a journey of musical discovery and adventure. Contemporary music festival with portraits of composers George Crumb, Alvin Lucier and Robert Ashley, plus appearances and performances by Carsten Nicolai & Michael Nyman and more, as well as discussions and installations.
