Theatrical Hope Out of Africa
Africa's Hope brings the incredible energy and irresistible rythyms of African dance and drumming to The Carriageworks, alongside emotional stories of survival of genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

A powerful true story of survival comes to Leeds in October when Africa’s Hope visits The Carriageworks.

Mashirika bring their story Africa's Hope to communicate a message of hope for the future of Africa, whilst confronting the hard memories and issues behind the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

The company, all survivors and refugees from Rwanda, are dedicated to raising awareness of the consequences of accepting racism and prejudice in society.

Africa’s Hope brings the incredible energy and irresistible rhythms of African dance and music to the stage coupled with emotional testimonies from the Rwandan tragedy.

Hope Azeda, Artistic Director of Mashirika, said:

“I believe theatre is a great tool for social transformation. I call our style ‘real life for real theatre’ a form that transforms a personal story to stage. This has been a great tool for establishing a connection between a performer and an audience, whilst also tackling subjects of persecution, justice and reconciliation.”

Mashirika is recognized as Rwanda's foremost youth performing arts company. Now approaching its 10th birthday, Mashirika has a commitment to bringing real-life theatre to an international audience.

The company has been on the forefront of African developmental theatre, working in partnership with the Aegis Trust to pass on messages about the prevention and consequences of genocide.

David Roche, General Manager of The Carriageworks, said:

“Africa’s Hope is sure to be a performance full of emotion as people bring their tragic experiences to The Carriageworks stage. I hope this kind of powerful message helps unite people against genocide and prevents what happened in Rwanda ever occurring again.”

Africa’s Hope visits the Carriageworks on October 11, before moving on to London and the rest of its UK tour.
