It records the joint projects of this now legendary experimental rock group with plastic/visual artists, film-makers, designers and musicians, as well as a selection of works by artists chosen by members of the group.

Organized in six thematic chapters whose titles are dictated by Sonic Youth songs, the exhibition proposes a journey across America from East to West, during which different artists will join the group. This trip starts with a presentation of materials associated with Sonic Youth activities (maquettes of album covers, posters, fanzines, flyers...), followed by a section presenting works of artists from the New York scene of the early 1980s, the period when the group was formed. It then takes us towards works dealing with suburban themes and long periods spent roaming along highways, while the last section is devoted to works whose theme is the West Coast.

Through the multidisciplinary production of Sonic Youth and the artists brought together for this show, what is being outlined here is an alternative history of contemporary culture, art here being closely bound up with issues of the day, and social matters: from teenage crises to every kind of drift and shift, from gender and sexuality to celebrity, from fashion to religion.

Structurée en six chapitres thématiques dont les titres sont dictés par des chansons de Sonic Youth, l’exposition propose une traversée de l’Amérique d’Est en Ouest au cours de laquelle différents artistes se joignent au groupe. Ce voyage débute par une présentation de matériaux liés à l’activité de Sonic Youth (maquettes de couvertures d’album, affiches, fanzines, flyers…), suivie d’une section présentant des œuvres d’artistes issus de la scène new-yorkaise du début des années 1980, époque de constitution du groupe. Il nous conduit ensuite vers des œuvres traitant des thèmes de la banlieue et des longues errances sur les routes, tandis que la dernière section est consacrée à des œuvres ayant pour thème la côte Ouest.

À travers la production pluridisciplinaire de Sonic Youth et des artistes réunis pour cette exposition, c’est une histoire alternative de la culture contemporaine qui se dessine ici, l’art étant ici étroitement articulé à des questions d’époque et de société : de la crise de l’adolescence aux dérives en tout genre, du genre et de la sexualité à la célébrité, de la mode à la religion.
