Manifesta is one of the most important European Biennials of Contemporary Art and it takes place every two years in different cities. Being itinerant is its peculiarity, and as Documenta Kassel and the International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, it is one of the highlights for international contemporary art. In the past years Manifesta has been hosted in Rotterdam, Luxembourg, Liubljana, Frankfurt, San Sebastian. In 2008 for the first time Manifesta will take place not in a city but in a whole region: Trentino – South Tyrol, Italy. The area has been selected for its historical heritage, its artistic and cultural facilities and especially for its striking examples of industrial archaeology buildings, which are linked to the work history and the progressive industrialisation of the territory. This land has always been a bridge between Latin and German culture and it connects cultural developments as well as Southern and Northern habits. Manifesta 7 will take place in several venues chosen amongst the most important examples of industrial archaeology existing in the Brenner axis, from Rovereto to Trento, from Bolzano to the fortress of Fortezza, to create a broad, multi-faceted event characterized as “100 miles in 100 days”. Along with the various exhibitions, the whole territory itself can be seen as the catalyst for a series of collateral events, encouraging research and focusing on the relationship between different cultures.

Manifesta ist eine der wichtigsten Biennalen für zeitgenössische Kunst in Europa; sie findet alle zwei Jahre an einem anderem Ort statt. Neben der “documenta” in Kassel und der Biennale in Venedig – von denen sie sich grundlegend dadurch unterscheidet, dass sie eine Wanderbiennale ist – gehört Manifesta zu den wichtigsten und angesehensten Veranstaltungen auf dem internationalen Parkett der zeitgenössischen Kunst.
Bisher wurde die Großveranstaltung in den Städten Rotterdam, Luxemburg, Ljubljana, Frankfurt und San Sebastian abgehalten.
2008 wird die Manifesta zum ersten Mal nicht in einer Stadt, sondern in einer ganzen Region stattfinden. Den Zuschlag für die Austragung der Manifesta 7 erhielt die Region Trentino-Südtirol aufgrund ihres außergewöhnlichen postindustriellen Erbes und ihrer Kulturlandschaft, welche eine Grundlage für die Ausarbeitung der künstlerischen Aktivitäten der Manifesta 7 bilden werden, sowie aufgrund des Aufeinandertreffens italienischer und deutscher Kultur: Manifesta wird entlang einer Achse stattfinden, auf der sich unterschiedliche kulturelle Tendenzen und Entwicklungen sowie Nord und Süd begegnen und gegenseitig bereichern.
Manifesta 7 wird an verschiedenen Austragungsorten stattfinden. Es sind dies einige der bedeutendsten, geschichtsträchtigen Industriedenkmäler auf der Brennerachse von Rovereto über Trient und Bozen bis zur Franzensfeste.
Über diese einzigartigen Räumlichkeiten hinaus, welche die Kunstveranstaltung beherbergen werden, wird das Gebiet selbst durch ein reichhaltiges Rahmenprogramm zum Ausstellungsort. Die zeitgenössische Kunst von Manifesta 7 trifft sich so mit der Kunst des Landes zu einer kreativen Symbiose.

Manifesta è una tra le più importanti Biennali Europee di Arte Contemporanea e ha luogo ogni due anni in una città diversa. Accanto a documenta di Kassel e alla Biennale di Venezia, dalle quali si differenzia per la peculiarità di essere un evento itinerante, si può ritenere uno degli appuntamenti artistici internazionali di maggior prestigio nell’ambito dell’arte contemporanea. Finora la manifestazione è stata accolta dalle città di Rotterdam, Lussemburgo, Ljiubljana, Francoforte, San Sebastian. Nel 2008 per la prima volta Manifesta non sarà ospitata da una città, ma da un’intera regione, il Trentino – Alto Adige/Südtirol, scelta per il suo patrimonio storico, le sue strutture artistiche e culturali, per i suggestivi edifici di archeologia industriale legati alle vicende del lavoro e della progressiva industrializzazione del suo territorio, storicamente ponte tra la cultura latina e tedesca, territorio dove transitano e si contaminano le tendenze e gli sviluppi culturali che avvengono al sud e al nord. Manifesta 7 troverà collocazione su più sedi scelte fra alcuni dei più significativi edifici storici e di archeologia industriale posti sull’asse del Brennero, da Rovereto a Trento, da Bolzano al Forte di Fortezza in comunicazione gli uni con gli altri: “100 miglia per 100 giorni”. Oltre alle singole location sarà lo stesso territorio, nel suo complesso, a fungere da catalizzatore di una serie di iniziative collaterali nello sforzo di una ricerca incentrata sulle questioni relative ai rapporti tra culture diverse.
