Godspeed You! Black Emperor was the best known group belonging to this scene and their bassist, Mauro Pezzente, decided he wanted to open a music venue so that Montreal bands, many of whom were his friends, would have a place to play. As a result he and partner Kiva Stimac founded the Casa del Popolo and Sala Rossa in 2000. As chance would have it, the local music scene continued to build momentum and these venues became extremely well known as they hosted many local bands which hit it big in short order including: Arcade Fire, Sam Roberts, Dears, Stars, Metric, and Patrick Watson. The venues’ popularity was such that in a few years they were covered in international media outlets.
A short time after launching the venues, Mauro and Kiva launched the Suoni Per Il Popolo. They wanted a festival that would present eclectic styles of experimental and avant garde music in an independent environment. The first festival ran for six weeks in June and July of 2000 and featured three or four concerts a week.

From the beginning the festival was a hit with a coterie of fans who were savvy enough to realize that they had stumbled upon a cornucopia of ultra rare music. The festival fearlessly dove in and booked all kinds of local artists but also brought in rarely seen and heard artists from Europe and the United States. At the same time, the festival presented concerts in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where artists and audiences felt free to mingle. The audiences loved the results and showed up excited, focused, and ready to listen to powerful contemporary sounds. This left the musicians raving about the electric atmosphere, and audience members coming back night after night for more exciting music.

The Suoni Per Il Popolo and its venues are located in Mile End, a Montreal neighbourhood which is famed for its artistic and creative atmosphere. This reputation was borne out by the latest Canadian census which showed Mile End as having one of the highest densities of artists per capita in the country. The Suoni Per Il Popolo is proud to be part of such a dynamic and talented comunity, where social support, creativity and authenticity is the golden rule. We are also very proud to be back for an eighth year, so much that we can’t wait for glorious June to come around. C’est pendant que Godspeed You! Black Emperor achevait son immense travail de défrichage mondial pour les formations locales à sa suite que leur bassiste Mauro Pezzente et sa partenaire Kiva Stimac, décidèrent d’ouvrir un endroit permettant de présenter des concerts de musiques non commerciales, ces musiques pregnant de plus en plus de place sans toutefois avoir de lieu de diffusion, autant pour les groupes locaux q u ’ i n t e r n a t i o n a u x . Conséquemment, ils ont créé la Casa del Popolo et la Sala Rossa en 2000.

Depuis, la scène musicale locale a continué sa belle progression et ces deux salles de concerts sont devenues extrêmement populaires et même incontournables. En servant ainsi d'hôte à plusieurs groupes locaux qui étaient à l'aube de leur fulgurante ascension tels qu'Arcade Fire, Sam Roberts, The Dears, Stars, Metric et Patrick Watson, ces lieux auront agi comme de puissants catalyseurs. C’est peu de temps après l'ouverture des deux salles de concerts que le projet d’une grande célébration à l’image de sa culture que le festival Suoni Per Il Popolo fut imaginé. Pendant six semaines partagées entre juin et juillet 2000 et à raison de trois à quatre concerts par semaine, le festival prit son envol et fut un succès instantané auprès d'un cercle d'amateurs et d’adeptes qui réalisèrent rapidement qu'ils venaient de tomber sur une corne d'abondance de musiques rares et branchées et qui surtout leur correspondait à merveille.

Aujourd’hui, le festival est devenu un des événements de la musique d’avant-garde les plus reconnu à travers le monde et fait parler de lui dans les plus grands médias. Il s’est aussi imposé au niveau local, où le nombre d’adeptes ne cesse de croître. Le festival et ses salles sont situés au coeur des quartiers Mile- End et Plateau Mont-Royal, qui n’ont plus besoin de présentation en ce qui a trait à leur force créative et culturelle. L’excellente réputation du festival et de ses salles est facile à expliquer si on se fie au dernier recensement qui démontre que le Mile-End est l’endroit au Canada qui compte la plus
grande proportion d’artistes par habitant. Le Suoni Per Il Popolo et ses artisans sont fiers de faire partie d’une communauté dynamique aussi riche de talent, où l’amitié, la créativité et l’authenticité priment sur tout le reste. Nous sommes aussi très fiers d’être de retour cette année avec cette 8ième édition qui nous fait trépigner d’impatience tellement nous aimons sa composition.
