Riff - Rome Independent Film Festival
This year’s program consists of about 150 movies ranging from world premieres to debut works in the unique style this festival was first created: to give visibility to movies far from mainstream circles.

The XI Edition of Rome Independent Film Festival will take place on 13-20 April at Nuovo Cinema Aquila and the newly added location Casa del Cinema in Rome, both venues are renowned for hosting important film events.

This year’s program consists of about 150 movies ranging from world premieres to debut works in the unique style this festival was first created: to give visibility to movies far from mainstream circles.

RIFF has quickly become one of the most awaited events in Rome for independent film-makers and will host movies from every part of the world, dedicating special attention to artists from the “new Europe”.

Amongst debut works in competition we have the Danish “Room 304” directed by Birgitte Starmose and Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson will present his “Volcano” after its successful participation in the Director’s Fortnight section at 2011 Cannes Festival. Polish director Greg Zglinski will present his much anticipated second movie “Courage”. Representing Germany are “Angel Express” by RP Kahl and David Wnendt’s debut work “Combat Girl”.

Brazil participates with “Meu Pais” by Andrè Ristum and “Capitans of Sand” by Cecilia Amado, the granddaughter of the late Brazilian author Jorge Amado. “The Silent Thief” by Jennifer Clary represents the United States in the competition.

Documentaries will also have a significant role in this year’s RIFF edition. Italy is present with 12 documentaries scheduled to be screened at Casa del Cinema. Here are some of the selected works: “Pino Masciari” by Alessandro Marinelli deals with the story of the entrepreneur from Calabria who refused to pay the racket imposed by the local mafia. “Mettersi a posto – il pizzo a Palermo” by Marco Battaglia, Gianluca Donati, Laura Schimmenti and Andrea Zulini tells another story of mafia and extortions in Sicily and people and institutions’ response. The Arab Spring is at the center of two documentaries: “Libya Hurra” by Mirko Bellis and “Mino Tawara – Exporting Change” by Kami Fares. Other Italian works are “I colonnelli di Roma” by Stefano Migliore that deals with today’s Italy and contemporary cinema; “The Akram Tree” by Francesco Cabras and Alberto Molinari, who won Best Documentary Award at Dhaka International Film Festival and Valentina Carnelutti’s debut work “Melkamzena” a documentary on Ethiopia in collaboration with NGO Action Aid.

Casa del Cinema will be the venue for the IV Forum “I nuovi profili della Produzione Cinematografica Europea Indipendente” (New profiles of European Independent Film Production) hosting producers who joined the project Producers on the move launched at 2000 Cannes Festival by the European Film Promotion (EFP) to discuss about international distribution process.

Competing in the feature film section is the much awaited “Ristabbanna” by Gianni Cardillo e Daniele De Plano starring Tiziana Lodato and Ben Gazzara in his last role.

Anticipation is high for the selection of Italian short films starring actors such as Maurizio Crozza, Alessandro Haber, Gianmarco Tognazzi, Vinicio Marchioni, Giorgio Colangeli, Luca Ward, Carlotta Natoli, Mario Donatone and new faces as Daniela Virgilio, Andrea Sartoretti, Luca Lionello, Filippo Pucillo, Giovanni Calcagno.

Riff - Rome Independent Film Festival
