Pavillon is delighted to present Doing Time, its second project and the rst solo exhibition of Icelandic artist Gudrun Benonysdottir (Guðrún Benónýsdóttir) in Italy. The title “Doing Time” focuses on the relation with the past, the making of time and the production of memory. “Doing time” is also conceived as the prototype of a travelling exhibition from Lucca to Reykjavik starting from the catalogue, which is an integral part of the project. Often a catalogue is a version of an exhibition; it can be either completely independent or the only object produced; in each case it introduces the relationship between an exhibition and its documentation.
The artist uses glass, mirrors, silver cards, photos or painted plastic, shiny and transparent materials assembled within installations: a kind of sets for reveries and involuntary mnemonic activities. In the Arcades project* Walter Benjamin deals with transparency; the glass surfaces of the late nineteenth century arcades merged the outside with the inside, becoming part of a new perception of the world. A perception inaugurated by the flâneur’s distracted memory, the absent-minded traveller looking outside the train window or the rst cinemagoer. The surrealist vision of the city as phantasmagoria and dream, which revealed the archaic character of modernity, was contrasted by Benjamin’s awakening: the gradual awareness of reality and history that we acknowledge only through our memory. Remembering is awakening. The space created by Gudrun is a real one, a set to make the daydreamer’s activity possible – as, in Benjamin’s terms, her or his awakening. A sort of heterotopia as the inverse model of utopia; where utopias designate areas without eective localization and heterotopias are instead real places. Heterotopia is a term coined by Michel Foucault to describe those places opened to other sites, but whose relations are suspended, neutralized or reversed**. They are “other” environments, other spaces, both physical and mental, as the space of a phone call or the moment you see yourself in a mirror. Thus, an environment appointed to create and produce new possibilities.

Guðrún Benónýsdóttir (Iceland) lives and works in Berlin and Reykjavik. From 1995 to 2003 she studied in Paris and at the National Academy of the Arts in Oslo. After her return to Iceland she has been exhibiting in public and private spaces in Northern Europe (Fotogalleriet Oslo Living Art Museum Reykjavik, etc..). Since 2010 she has been working on her new artistic film. Her work has also been presented in publications and magazines (such as "Endemic" magazine, "The art of not making" Thames & Hudson; "Apogee" Revolver "Nesten" Askehaug). She works for an MA degree in Educational Studies at the University of Iceland. Alongside her artistic career, she is one of the founders and directors of academic Útúrdúr Reykjavik, publisher and bookshop specialised in contemporary art and was one of the founders of the Icelandic Kling and Bang Gallery

Pavillon is a new non-profit project for contemporary art. Through exhibitions, lectures, collaborations and other research tools it provides an in progress platform for the promotion of practices, ideas and art projects of international interest.

Gudrun benonysdottir - doing time

Pavillon inaugura il suo secondo progetto con l’artista islandese Gudrun Benonysdottir
(Guðrún Benónýsdóttir) alla sua prima personale in Italia.
Il titolo “Doing time” richiama principalmente il rapporto con il passato, il farsi del tempo e la produzione di memoria.
“Doing time” è anche concepito come il prototipo di una mostra itinerante da Lucca a Reykjavik a partire dal catalogo, che diventa parte integrante del progetto.
Spesso un catalogo costituisce una versione di una mostra. Può essere sia del tutto autonomo oppure il solo oggetto prodotto, introducendo in ogni caso al rapporto tra una mostra e la sua documentazione.
L’artista utilizza vetri, specchi, carte argentate, foto o plastiche dipinte, materiali lucidi e trasparenti assemblati all’interno di installazioni: sorta di set per rêveries e attività mnemoniche involontarie.
La trasparenza è stata trattata da Walter Benjamin in Passagenwerk*. Le superci di vetro delle gallerie di ne Ottocento confondono interno ed esterno, diventando parte della nuova percezione del mondo inaugurata dalla memoria distratta âneur, dal viaggiatore che guarda sovrapensiero dal nestrino del treno in movimento, o dallo spettatore del primo cinematografo. Alla visione surrealista della città come sogno e fantasmagoria, che in ultima istanza mostrava il carattere arcaico della modernità, Benjamin contrappone il risveglio: la presa di coscienza graduale della realtà e della storia. Si conosce difatti soltanto attraverso il ricordo. Ma ricordare è un risvegliarsi.
L’ambiente di Gudrun è un luogo reale, un set per rendere possibile l’attività del sognatore ad occhi aperti – come del resto, nel senso di Benjamin, anche il suo risveglio. Una sorta di eterotopia, che è quasi il modello inverso dell'utopia. Laddove le utopie designano ambienti privi di un'eettiva localizzazione, le eterotopie sono invece luoghi reali. Eterotopia è un termine coniato da Michel Foucault per indicare i luoghi aperti su altri luoghi, ma i cui rapporti risultano sospesi, neutralizzati o invertiti **. Sono ambienti altri, simultaneamente sici e mentali, come lo spazio di una chiamata telefonica o il momento in cui ci si vede nello specchio. Un ambiente, dunque, volto a produrre nuove possibilità.

Guðrún Benónýsdóttir (Islanda) vive tra Berlino e Reykjavik. Dal 1995 al 2003 studia a Parigi e presso la National Academy of the Arts di Oslo. Dopo il suo rientro in Islanda espone in spazi pubblici e privati nel Nord Europa (Fotogalleriet Oslo; Living Art Museum Reykjavik, etc.). Dal 2010 lavora al suo nuovo film d’artista. Il suo lavoro inoltre è stato presentato in pubblicazioni e riviste quali (“Endemi” magazine, “The art of not making” Thames & Hudson; “Apogee” Revolver; “Nesten” Askehaug).
Lavora attualmente a un M.A. degree per Educational studies all'Università dell'Islanda. Parallelamente alla sua attività artistica è tra i fondatori e direttori di Útúrdúr a a Reykjavík, casa editrice e bookshop specializzato per l'arte contemporanea
