This survey exhibition explores the idea of accidental and coincidental art, either reinforcing or rejecting the thesis that this type of art can contribute positively to the understanding of contemporary art practice and trends. It will help define accidental art as art that is subject to occurrence, is mostly purely visual, and to which the artist is merely a participant; and coincidental art as art that has become something exceptional simply because some fortuitous convergence of energies operate – in this case the artist has no complete control. On a more general level, this exhibition will stimulate the discussion about the boundaries of contemporary art both as practice and as a definition. The phenomenon of accidental or coincidental art will be explored diversely by the eleven international artists in the show.
