We are glad to welcome you, Thursday 24th November at MACRO – Contemporary Art Museum, of Rome, to the exhibition opening of Adelita Husni-Bey and Elisa Strinna, prize winners of the 2nd Edition of 6ARTISTA, a prize - created by Associazione Civita and Fondazione Pastificio Cerere with the support of Allianz – aimed at promoting the professional growth of under-30, talented artists who live in Italy.
This event reaffirms the Museum attention towards new generations of artists and the fellowship amongst MACRO, Civita and Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, entities which are demonstrating to be strongly engaged in the promotion and diffusion of contemporary art. 6ARTISTA, whose 1st edition took place in 2009, is a relevant opportunity for its young winners, to whom a highly cultural training career is offered. Adelita Husni-Bey and Elisa Strinna actually lived in Rome for six months cooperating with Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, which has always been a breeding ground for artists’ experimentation since the seventies’, and further three months with Cité Internationale des Arts of Paris, thanks to their International meetings occurred in Rome. The main goal is to foster the dialogue through different languages, ideas and techniques, in order to allow young people to analyse thoroughly and mark out their own art of poetry.
The exhibition at MACRO, edited by Vincenzo de Bellis - curator in residence of Fondazione Pastificio Cerere for the year 2011 – will be open to public until 29th January 2012 and shows four works of the two artists, realized intentionally for this exhibition.
Starting from the analysis of a determined space, particularly the Esquilino market in Rome, Elisa Strinna developed a reflection on cultural identity and the relationship man established with the natural element. Running through the history of the artistic genre also known as “still life”, the artist created a similarity between fruit and works of art, seen as both nourishment and goods of exchange, turning into a contemporary light such typical expressive forms of our cultural tradition. The work Variazioni su Canestra di Frutta (Variations on Fruit Wicker Basket) is made up of three reproductions of the still life painted by Caravaggio (64x46 cm) to which images of contemporary lifeless objects has been added. The second work of art of the exhibition is a short movie, La ragazza mela, through which Elisa Strinna presents the tale with the same name, written by Italo Calvino and collected in Fiabe Italiane, in contemporary terms. In this case as well, fruits become the repository, the opportunity to investigate instincts and attitudes the contemporary man establishes between the natural element and the work of art.
Adelita Husni-Bey presents A Holiday From Rules, a work resulting from her interest towards the radical pedagogy and its way of laying the grounds for an alternative society, different from the one we live in. Her project is made up of two works of art, mainly inspired to anarchical movements and to the experience of Escuela Moderna, established in 1991 in Barcelona by the freethinker Fancisc Ferrer y Guardia. The installation I want the sun I want includes a nine-minute movie in 16mm, transferred on DVD, filmed in a long take realized in a school in Paris devoid of inner walls. Work’s audio is formed by a sequence of debates on education organized by the artist to L.A.P. (High School autonomously run) between teachers and students, focusing on the importance of education and its modern methods. Postcards from the desert island is, on the contrary, an installation made up of elements realized in cooperation with the students of École Vitruve during a three-week workshop. Students built a kind of desert island in the school hall, in which they pictured to live all together: experiencing and questioning on practices of living in community and sharing the practise of anarchical collectivism.
The exhibition is supplemented with two monographic catalogues by Vincenzo de Bellis, edited and distributed by Mousse Publishing.
Of Italian and Libyan blood, Adelita Husni-Bey was born in 1985. She is a artist and searcher graduated from the Chelsea College of Art & Design, BA Fine ArtsHons (2003-2007) and the Goldsmiths University, Masters in Sociology and Urban Cultures (2009-2010). She pointed her research on autonomy, micro-utopia, territoriality and property, collective memory, (the creation of) disagreement and control, anarchical pedagogy and free school. She is actually resident in Pastificio Cerere in Rome, after being the 6ARTISTA award-winning. Previous exhibitions include: 100 di 50, edited by Marco Scotini and Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, NABA, Milan; American Mountains, Nunnery, London; Posso Errare ma non di Core', edited by Andrea Bruciati, Galleria Civica of Monfalcone. Adelita also participated to XVI course of Visual Arts at Fondazione Ratti, received the sponsorship of British Council, gained the last edition of Euromobil for under-30 artists, and recently obtained funding from Movin up, for young artists mobility.
Elisa Strinna was born in Padua in 1982. After graduating from Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna she continued her studies on Visual Arts at IUAV, Venice. She focused on the relationship between man and natural element, the role of work of art in contemporary society, the cultural dynamics resulting from displacement of goods and people between countries. In 2010/2011 she won the 6ARTISTA prize of Pastificio Cerere. Among other important residences: artist’s studies at Fondazione Bevilaqua la Masa, Venice between 2008/2009. In 2010 she took part in Corso Superiore di Arti Visive in Fondazione Ratti, Como in collaboration with the artist Hans Haacke as visiting professor. In 2009 she participated in the artist’s Peter Friedl workshop at Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’arte. Giovedì 24 novembre si inaugura presso il MACRO – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma la mostra di Adelita Husni-Bey ed Elisa Strinna, vincitrici della seconda edizione di 6ARTISTA, il Premio - concepito dall’Associazione Civita e dalla Fondazione Pastificio Cerere e con il sostegno di Allianz - per supportare la crescita professionale di promettenti talenti under 30 che vivono in Italia.
Con questo evento si riconfermano l’attenzione del Museo verso le nuove generazioni di artisti e il sodalizio fra MACRO, Civita e Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, realtà fortemente impegnate nella divulgazione e promozione dell’arte contemporanea.
6ARTISTA, la cui prima edizione si è svolta nel 2009, rappresenta un’opportunità sempre più importante per i giovani vincitori, ai quali viene offerto un percorso formativo di alto livello culturale. Adelita Husni-Bey ed Elisa Strinna hanno infatti trascorso un periodo di residenza di sei mesi a Roma presso la Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, punto di riferimento fin dagli anni Settanta della sperimentazione artistica, e altri tre mesi presso la Cité Internationale des Arts di Parigi, grazie alla collaborazione degli Incontri Internazionali di Roma. L’obiettivo è quello di favorire il confronto con diversi linguaggi, idee e tecniche, affinché i giovani individuati possano approfondire e caratterizzare la propria poetica.
La mostra al MACRO, curata da Vincenzo de Bellis - curator in residence della Fondazione Pastificio Cerere per il 2011 - è aperta al pubblico fino al 29 gennaio 2012 e presenta quattro lavori delle due artiste realizzati appositamente per l’occasione.
Partendo dall’analisi specifica di un luogo ben caratterizzato come il mercato dell’Esquilino di Roma, Elisa Strinna ha strutturato una riflessione sull’identità culturale e sul rapporto che l’uomo contemporaneo intrattiene con il dato naturale. Ripercorrendo la storia del genere artistico noto come “natura morta”, l’artista ha creato un parallelismo tra frutta e opera d’arte, entrambe fonti di nutrimento e merci di scambio, rivisitando in chiave contemporanea alcune forme espressive proprie della nostra tradizione culturale. L’opera Variazioni su Canestra di Frutta si compone di tre riproduzioni della natura morta realizzata da Caravaggio (64x46 cm) alle quali sono state aggiunte o sostituite le immagini di oggetti inanimati emblematici della nostra contemporaneità. La seconda opera in mostra consiste in un breve film, dal titolo La ragazza mela, con il quale Elisa Strinna rende nuovamente attuale l’omonima fiaba, trascritta e raccolta da Italo Calvino nelle sue Fiabe Italiane. Anche in questo caso la frutta diventa il ricettacolo, il feticcio attraverso cui esplorare pulsioni e atteggiamenti che l’uomo instaura nella contemporaneità con il dato naturale e l’opera d’arte.
Adelita Husni-Bey presenta A Holiday From Rules, un lavoro nato dal suo interesse per la pedagogia radicale e per il modo in cui questa educazione possa porre le basi di una società alternativa a quella che conosciamo. Il progetto è composto da due opere distinte, ispirate in gran parte a movimenti anarchici e all’esperienza dell’Escuela Moderna, fondata dal libero pensatore Fancisc Ferrer y Guardia nel 1901 a Barcellona. L’installazione I want the sun I want comprende un film in 16mm, riversato su DVD, in piano sequenza di nove minuti realizzato in una scuola di Parigi senza muri interni. L’audio di questo lavoro è costituito da una serie di dibattiti organizzati dall’artista al L.A.P. (Liceo Autogestito di Parigi) tra insegnanti e alunni sul tema dell’educazione, mettendo in discussione la necessità dell’insegnamento e le sue metodologie odierne. Postcards from the desert island è invece un’installazione composta da elementi creati con gli alunni dell’École Vitruve durante un workshop di tre settimane, nel quale i bambini hanno costruito una sorta di isola deserta nel salone della scuola, immaginando di viverci insieme: questa esperienza li ha portati a interrogarsi su pratiche di vita collettiva e a confrontarsi con la pratica dell’anarco-collettivismo.
La mostra è accompagnata da due cataloghi monografici a cura Vincenzo de Bellis, editi e distribuiti da Mousse Publishing.
