Background

CAAPO are an art production organisation and curatorial agency, based in Cardiff (please see www.creativeassault.org for further info). CAAPO has received Arts Council funding to produce a series of events over the next 8 months under the project title of ‘Dystopia: Are We Nearly There Yet?’; this project will kick off with a residency and solo exhibition @ Milkwood Gallery - www.milkwoodgallery.com.

Project Concept

Dystopia’s are frequently created as warnings, or as satires, showing current trends extrapolated to a nightmarish conclusion (Wikipedia, 2011). The current international political landscape is littered with Orwellian references of dystopian ideology. It has become a time of ‘us and them’. CAAPO is very interested in the relationship between past, present and future in the creation of dystopian narratives and their reference to the international political landscape.

Application

Applications should include a short artists statement, a written proposal outlining the artist/s approach to the residency (500 words max), a CV and some visual documentation of their practice (10 images max). CAAPO is particularly interested in artists working with 3D intervention, performance and/or video – with a further preference shown to artists with a strong drawing element within their practice.
All applications must be received by 5pm, Friday 23rd September.

Residency Details

£500 Fee – half on commencement of residency and half on completion.
This fee includes all travel, materials and living costs. The chosen artist/s will be assisted in finding cheap local accommodation (if required).
Residency – Monday 17th October to Friday 4th November: Residency Space cleared by Sun 6th November.
The Residency Space will be open to the general public on Friday 28th October. The artist/s will be encouraged to engage in dialogue with the public throughout the day.
Solo Exhibition – Install; Monday 31st October to Friday 4th November.
Public View – Friday 4th November, 6-9pm.
Exhibition open until Saturday 26th November; Opening Hours - 10-5pm, Mon-Sat: Gallery Space cleared by Sunday 27th November.
The chosen artist/s will be invited to publicly discuss their work as part of CAAPO’s ‘Room For Discussion’ Series. This will be an evening event and will take place on Thursday 10th November.
Technical support and equipment will be provided where possible.
