London Book Fair 2011
The London Book Fair celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2011. Russia is Market Focus country in 2011, following South Africa last year.
 
 
The London Book Fair is the global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film and digital channels. Taking place every spring in the world’s premier publishing and cultural capital, it is a unique opportunity to explore, understand and capitalise on the innovations shaping the publishing world of the future. The London Book Fair brings you direct access to customers, content and emerging markets. The London Book Fair celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2011 and will take place from 11th - 13th April. Russia is Market Focus country in 2011, following South Africa last year.

The London Book Fair is delighted to announce bestselling authors Claire Tomalin, Boris Akunin and Julia Donaldson with illustrator Axel Scheffler, as the Authors of the Day for 2011.

Claire Tomalin
Monday 11th April

The opening day of the Fair will feature Claire Tomalin, the author of highly acclaimed biographies including Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Samuel Pepys, Mary Wollstonecraft and Katherine Mansfield. Her latest book, Charles Dickens: A Life will be published by Viking in October 2011, for the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Tuesday 12th April - The Market Focus Author of the Day
The London Book Fair Market Focus Author of the Day has been supported by the British Council, and this year features Boris Akunin, one of the most widely read authors in Russia. Boris Akunin has been compared to Gogol, Tolstoy and Arthur Conan Doyle, and his Erast Fandorin novels have sold over eighteen million copies in Russia alone. The final book in the series, The Diamond Chariot, was one of the fastest selling Russian books of all time, and will appear in English in September.

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
Wednesday 13th April

The Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s best selling children’s picture book is an international publishing phenomenon with over 4 million copies sold worldwide and has been translated in to over 30 languages. Since its publication in March 1999 their creation has won over a legion of fans and won numerous awards. 2009 saw The Gruffalo’s tenth anniversary marked with a celebratory publishing programme and the broadcast of a much-anticipated film.



Highlights for 2011

- Russia Market Focus Cultural Programme
The Market Focus cultural programme for Russia 2011 is organised with the British Council, as our strategic partner, and The Russian Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communication and Academia Rossica as their official partner. This vibrant cultural programme involving writers, readers and industry professionals aims to provide insight into contemporary UK and Russian literature, promoting a deeper understanding of each others’ markets, international collaboration and creative exchange. Now in the fourth year of our strategic partnership with the British Council, and following the success of our collaboration on the Arab World Market Focus in 2008, India (2009), South Africa (2010), the 2011 cultural programme at The London Book Fair will provide a unique opportunity for contemporary Russian writers to reach a global publishing audience and take part in discussions and debates aimed at strengthening cultural relations.

- The Digital Zone and Theatre
Ebooks and digital content have revolutionised the publishing industry. Established in 2009, the Digital Zone & Theatre continues to grow from strength to strength. Located on the show floor in Earls Court 2 and featuring over 40 exhibitors from across the digital supply chain this is a must visit area for CMS, distribution, platforms, applications, devices, tablets, mobile, e-readers and other digital solutions.
Bigger than ever, The Digital Zone Theatre is a dedicated feature area showcasing the latest products and suppliers from over 50 companies involved in digital publishing. The area will host 20-minute presentations throughout each day from the Digital Zone Theatre sponsors.

- Children's Zone & Theatre
The London Book Fair is launching a Children’s Innovation Zone at the 2011 Fair. Part of the Children’s Zone, it will include a brand new theatre on the show floor dedicated to promoting new ideas specific to children’s publishing. The Children’s Innovation Zone has been set up to reflect the huge developments in children’s publishing and it will include innovative publishers and authors, discussing the latest trends in children’s publishing. Contributors to the innovation section will include Val Braithwaite, Art Director at Bloomsbury on Monday lunchtime, and Macmillan will be reviewing some innovative promotions around The Gruffalo on Red Nose Dayin the zone on Wednesday at 11am. The London Book Fair is also delighted to welcome the cream of children’s writing to the Fair, including Philip Pullman;Roger McGough; Eoin Colfer; Francesca Simon; Lauren Child; Julia Donaldson; Axel Scheffler; Tony Bradman; Aidan Chambers; Beverly Naidoo; Frank Cottrell-Boyce; INJ Culbard; Rob Davis, and MG Harris. For the second year, The London Book Fair is partnering with www.childrensillustrators.com, the leading online resource for children's illustrators, animators and agents, to present a dedicated ‘Illustrators Corner’. This will include a prominent display area which will feature top illustrators work including Jane Porter, winner of BookTrust’s illustrators prize, as well as up and coming illustrators. Shortlisted illustrations for both Cheltenham Illustration Awards and New Illustrator Awards 2012 will be on display. The Children's & Young Adult Publishing Zone is one of the Fair’s largest zones and main seminar streams, featuring 150 exhibitors with a further 450 general exhibitors offering children’s content. It is located in Earls Court 1 and it will have a redaisle carpet and stand theme to differentiate it from the rest of the Fair.

- Lifetime Achievement Award
The London Book Fair is pleased to announce that the eighth annual Lifetime Achievement Award in International Publishing, sponsored by SBS Worldwide and in association with the Publishers Association, will be awarded to Sonny Mehta, Editor-in-Chief of Alfred A. Knopf Publishers, one of the world’s most distinguished publishers. The London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award in International Publishing celebrates an individual's career dedication to breaking down borders in international publishing. Anyone whether they be a publisher, agent, editor, scout or involved in any other aspect of international publishing, from any country in the world can be nominated. The award is judged by The London Book Fair Advisory Board, made up of senior figures in the international publishing industry, under the chairmanship of Simon Master, Non Executive Chair, The London Book Fair.

- Film & TV
Bringing together film & TV producers with over 300 literary agencies and publishers offering content with screen adaptation potential, as well as a full seminar programme and networking events, The London Book Fair is truly unmissable for the film & TV community.
The London Book Fair hosts the worlds largest International Rights Centre (IRC) which brings you more quality content from around the world. Networking sessions will be held within the IRC at times throughout the fair allowing you to meet with Literary Agents with content for TV/Film adaptation.
Following the strong debut of the Film & TV Zone in 2009 there will be even more on offer for Film & TV producers, scouts, literary agents and publishers looking to buy or sell content at The London Book Fair 2011. With a range of seminars and networking events there are plenty of opportunities available for those involved in the adaptation process to meet to gain and share knowledge.
BAFTA and The London Book Fair are delighted to announce that they are hosting a film and TV networking drinks reception. This event is for rights holders and film/TV producers to meet and mingle during an extended break between the exciting seminar programme taking place in the adjacent Film & TV Theatre.
The New Title Showcase displays titles from a wide range of authors and publishers offering producers a unique opportunity to source new content that may not be available elsewhere. Titles are listed online and a catalogue of all the titles and contact details will be available to pick up on the stand.

- Author Events
The London Book Fair hosts a large number of author events throughout the fair. The Author of the Day programme showcases one author on each day of the show with the author taking part in a variety of events. The English PEN Literary Café offers you a space to take time out from business at the fair and listen to authors being interviewed about their work and experiences. The Cook Book Corner features celebrity chefs from around the world demonstrating their culinary skills.
