De verhalen over Moomin, die aanvankelijk als romans werden gepubliceerd, verschenen later ook in stripvorm in “Ny Tid” (1947-48) en in de” London Evening News” (1954-1959). Dankzij de tentoonstelling van het Belgisch Stripcentrum kunt u het universum van een grote schrijfster uit de 20ste eeuw ontdekken, met een rijke en extravagante persoonlijkheid, geholpen door een geraffineerde tekenstijl die lezers in meer dan veertig landen blijft bekoren.

Inleiding

Op deze ontdekkingsreis kunnen bezoekers eerst genieten van de beroemde vormen waarin de Moominverhalen verschenen, namelijk als populaire animatiecartoons, poppenfilms en de originele geïllustreerde romans en prentenboeken, alvorens de minder vertrouwde, verdere stripavonturen te leren kennen. Aanvankelijk verschenen de unieke Moomin-krantenstrips van Tove Jansson (1914-2001) van 1947-48 in de Finse krant Ny Tid, en van 1954 tot 1959 in de London Evening News. Deze latere stripverhalen, toen nog gepubliceerd in tal van bladen, werden pas recent herdrukt en herontdekt als klassiekers op gelijke voet met haar andere Moomin-meesterwerken. De Tove Jansson Archieven uit Moominvalley, in het Finse Tampere, heeft een vijftigtal zeldzame, originele tekeningen uitgeleend die haar hele artistieke loopbaan schetsen, van haar eerste covers en cartoons in de jaren ‘30 voor het satirische tijdschrift Garm, waarin de prototypes van haar Moomintrollen vaak opduiken, tot haar illustraties voor Alice in Wonderland, De Hobbit en andere beroemde boeken. Jammer genoeg vernietigde het Londense syndicaat het artwork van alle stripalbums, behalve één uit de jaren ‘50, maar Jansson hield tal van gedetailleerde potloodschetsen bij die naast proefdrukken van de afgewerkte strips te zien zijn. Aan de hand van foto’s, schilderijen en filmbeelden schetst de tentoonstelling ook een beeld van de familiale achtergrond van deze visionaire auteur en haar persoonlijke leven met haar partner Tuulikki Pietilä.

Tove Jansson en Moomin

Dit jaar is het 65 jaar geleden dat de toen 31-jarige Tove Jansson, een gevestigde, Finse cartooniste en artieste, haar eerste geïllustreerde boek publiceerde. In The Little Troll and The Great Flood (de kleine trol en de grote overstroming) stelde ze de vertederende Moomin-wereld voor. Jansson, die aanvankelijk in het Zweeds schreef, was haar verhaal begonnen in 1939. Als hoofdrolspeler koos ze voor het charmante personage Moom, dat leek op een klein, harig nijlpaard dat haar mascotte was geweest in haar cartoons en covers voor het tijdschrift Garm. In 13 boeken die in meer dan 30 talen werden vertaald, werden haar charmante wezens vervoegd door een aantal excentrieke, fascinerende personages zoals het Snorkmeisje, Snif, Snuisterik en Filifjonka . Het talent van Jansson blijkt ook uit haar Moomin-strips uit de jaren ’50 die nog meer lezers bereikten in 40 landen en 60 talen. Met een beeldhouwer als vader en een kunstenares als moeder groeide ze op in een bohémiengezin. Ze bracht haar zomers door op het kleine eiland van de familie in de Golf van Finland, die ze gebruikte als achtergrond voor haar Moominverhalen. Jansson werd een gevierd schilder, illustratrice en romanschrijfster, maar is vooral geliefd om haar vertederende Moominfamilie die wereldwijd populairder dan ooit is.

The exhibition produced by the Belgian Comic Strip Center allows visitors to discover the world of a major twentieth-century lady author, with a rich and extravagant personality, served by a refined drawing style which continues to charm her readers in more than forty countries.

Introduction to the exhibition:

On this voyage of discovery, visitors can begin by enjoying the famous forms of Moomin stories in their popular animated cartoons and puppet films and the original illustrated novels and picture books, before exploring their less familiar further adventures in comic strips. Tove Jansson (1914-2001) began creating these unique Moomin newspaper strips in 1947-48 for the Finnish paper Ny Tid, and then from 1954 to 1959 in the London Evening News. Widely syndicated at the time, these later comics have only recently been reprinted and rediscovered as classics equal to any of her other Moomin masterpieces. Around fifty rare original drawings are being loaned by the Tove Jansson Archives in Moominvalley, Tampere, Finland. These chart Jansson’s whole artistic career, from her early covers and cartoons in the 1930s for the satirical magazine Garm, in which prototypes of her Moomintrolls often lurk, to her illustrations for Alice in Wonderland, The Hobbit and other famous books. Tragically, the London syndicate destroyed the artworks from all but one episode of her 1950s comics, but Jansson kept many of her detailed pencil sketches which will be shown alongside proofs of the finished strips. The exhibition will also give an insight into the family background of this visionary author and and her personal life with her partner Tuulikki Pietilä through photographs, paintings and film footage.




Tove Jansson and Moomin

It was 65 years ago this year, when Tove Jansson, aged 31, an established Finnish cartoonist and artist, had her first illustrated book published, The Little Troll and The Great Flood, and introduced the endearing world of Moomin. Originally writing in Swedish, Jansson had first started her tale in 1939. For her main character she used the charming figure of Moomin, not unlike a white furry hippopotamus, which had been her mascot and signature in her cartoons and covers for Garm magazine. Over the course of 13 books translated into more than 30 languages, her charming creatures would be joined by a cast of eccentric, fascinating characters like The Snork Maiden, Sniff, Snufkin and Fillyjonk. Jansson’s genius is also evident in her Moomin comic strips in the 1950s which reached even more readers in 40 countries and 26 different languages. With a sculptor for a father and an artist for a mother, she grew up in a bohemian household. She spent summers on the family’s small island in the Gulf of Finland, which she drew as settings for her Moomin tales. Jansson became an acclaimed painter, illustrator and novelist, but she is particularly loved for her enchanting Moomin family who are more popular today than ever around the world.

Au cours de ce voyage exploratoire, les visiteurs pourront apprécier les célèbres formes des Moumines au travers des poupées et dessins animés populaires ainsi que des albums illustrés de dessins originaux, avant de partir à la découverte des aventures et bandes dessinées moins connues.

Tove Jansson (1914-2001) créa ses premières bandes dessinées en 1947-1948 pour le quotidien finlandais Ny Tid, poursuivant par la suite, de 1954 à 1959, pour le quotidien londonien Evening News. Ces dernières bandes dessinées très populaires à l’époque n’ont été réimprimées que très récemment et redécouvertes comme de grands classiques, à l’image des autres chefs-d’œuvre de la série des Moumines.

Une cinquantaine de dessins originaux ont été empruntés aux archives de Tove Jansson conservées dans la vallée des Moumines, à Tampere en Finlande. Ils retracent l’ensemble de la carrière artistique de Jansson, de ses premières couvertures comme de ses premiers dessins des années 30 pour le magazine Garn où rodent déjà les prémices des Trolls des Moumines, à ses illustrations pour Alice au Pays des Merveilles, Le Hobbit et autres célèbres romans. L’éditeur londonien eut la malencontreuse idée de détruire tous les originaux – à l’exception d’un seul épisode – de ses BD des années 50, mais Jansson a toutefois conservé de nombreux brouillons crayonnés avec beaucoup de détails et qui seront présentés aux côtés des planches imprimées. L’exposition se penchera aussi sur le passé familial de cet auteur visionnaire ainsi que sur sa vie privée en compagnie de son partenaire Tuulikki Pietilä, et ce à l’aide de photos, tableaux et extraits de films.

était le charmant Moumine, qui n’est pas sans rappeler un hippopotame duveteux et qui est toujours resté sa mascotte et sa signature à travers ses dessins et sur ses couvertures du magazine Garm. Au fil des 13 livres, traduits en plus de 30 langues, ses charmantes créatures furent rejointes par une galerie de personnages aussi excentriques que fascinants, tels la Demoiselle Snorq, Snif, Snufkin ou Fillyjonk.

Le génie de Jansson apparaît aussi dans les BD des Moumines au cours des années 50 où elles furent lues par davantage de lecteurs encore à travers 40 pays et ce en 60 langues.

Avec un père sculpteur et une mère artiste, Tove Jansson grandit dans un environnement bohème. Elle passa ses étés sur la petite île familiale située dans le Golfe de Finlande où elle situa par la suite le décor des aventures des Moumines. Jansson fut une artiste peintre, illustratrice et romancière renommée, mais elle est surtout reconnue pour la féerique famille des Moumines qui connaissent aujourd’hui encore une popularité grandissante dans le monde entier.
