A Ticket to Baghdad is an ongoing visual project by Claudia Zanfi and Gianmaria Conti, after a long tour of Iraq in 2002. Promoted by the cultural agency aMAZElab Milano (www.amaze.it), it consists in a serie of interviews to students and artists at the ‘Baghdad Art Academy’ about their dreams for the future, their wishes, their hopes.
Invited to patricipate at the 10th International Photography Festival of Aleppo, the authors present for the first time - together with the video projection “Ten Baghdad Dreams” - a serie of photographic images dedicated to the city and its architecture, focusing on the subject of public spaces for culture and the diffusion of book street markets and mobile libraries.
The images and interviews appears as expression of dreams - sometimes of nightmares. They represent the voices of the people and the exploration of the wishes of a young generation living in a conflict contest.
Iraq has been marked by political upheaval, dictatorship, war, embargo, exile, occupation. A thicket to Baghdad indicates an hypothetical terrain in which Iraqi students, artists, intellectuals have had to practice the ‘culture of necessity’, over the past three decades, as an act of salvation. It is a culture that does not belong to any aesthetic, ethic or political category; it belongs only to itself. The creation of these series of “social collages” reveals a degree of complexity and a critical attitude towards abuses in contemporary society.

The Old Electric Building is the center for the festival, a newly renovated vast industrial space. The festival will presents exhibitions, workshops, lectures and conferences. Le Pont Organization Aleppo is the main organizing body of the festival.

Un biglietto per Baghdad è un progetto artistico in divenire realizzato da Claudia Zanfi e Gianmaria Conti dopo un lungo viaggio compiuto in Iraq nel 2002. Promosso dal laboratorio culturale aMAZElab Milano (www.amaze.it) consiste in una serie di interviste realizzate presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Baghdad a studenti e artisti circa i loro sogni per il futuro, i loro desideri, le loro speranze.
Invitati a partecipare al 10° Festival Internazionale di Fotografia di Aleppo, gli autori presentano per la prima volta – insieme alla video proiezione “Ten Baghdad Dreams” – una serie di immagini fotografiche dedicate alla città e alla sue architetture, focalizzandosi sulla tematica dello spazio pubblico per la cultura e sul fenomeno della diffusione di libri per le strade, che avveniva attraverso temporanei “book street market” e l’uso di “Mobile Library” (Biblioteche Mobili).
Le immagini e le interviste appaiono come espressione di sogni – a volte di incubi. Sono l’esplorazione della voce della gente e degli inconsci desideri di una giovane generazione che vive in un contesto di conflitto.
L’Iraq è da lungo tempo segnato da sconvolgimenti politici, dittature, guerre, embarghi, esilio, occupazione. Un biglietto per Baghdad indica un ipotetico terreno in cui studenti, artisti ed intellettuali iracheni hanno dovuto praticare durante gli ultimi tre decenni la ‘cultura della necessità’, come atto di salvezza. È una cultura che non appartiene a nessuna categoria estetica, etica o politica; appartiene solo a se stessa. La creazione di queste serie di “collage sociali” rivela un grado di complessità e un’attitudine critica nei confronti degli abusi perpetuati dalla società contemporanea.

Le Pont Organization di Aleppo è il principale organizzatore del progetto.
