Solo exhibition with stencil paintings by Berlin based artist PISA73.
PISA73 (born 1973) came on to the Berlin street art scene in 2003 after a degree in visual communication. Having begun graffiti in 1990, his imagery arrives from a very focused sense of social scepticism and a propensity for a secular reading of his surroundings.
PISA73 artistic approach is sometimes blatantly derisive and his works contain messages of a highly political nature. 'One-liners' are embedded and hidden into his imagery to form an explosive entity. The pictures are harsh but also radiate a sense of unintentional beauty.
The element of recognition is important in PISA73's pictures. This becomes especially visible with the use of iconic brands and repositioned advertisements that are manipulated to form new meaning with the aim at transgressing the value systems imposed by commercial popular culture. The resulting works become clippings and windows from a culture preoccupied with self-obsession and indulgence. PISA73's works are a testament to a time of bloated romantic eclecticism, asking not what beauty is, but what beauty does – in the service of commerce, manipulation, misuse of power and corporate control.
