World Orchestra Mountjoy sq invites resident musicans playing ethnic instruments to share one song with other internationals to create an international ensamble. WOM! World Orchestra Mountjoy Square came from an idea of artist and director Eli McBett as part of her Informal Learning Programme for the development of Dublin’s Inner City, lively supported by Mountjoy Square Society. Mountjoy Square has many historic and cultural claims to fame – home to the first Dáil in 1919 and to Dublin’s most beloved playwright Séan O’Casey.
Latest census returns indicate that an above national and city average number of the people living on Mountjoy Square are immigrants, and the benefits of this project, based as it is in a deprived inner city area, are enormous: The project will engage non-Irish residents, Irish Travelers and settled Irish people in a joint artistic venture that is fun and educational The event will attract positive publicity to Mountjoy Square; The project will act as an example of excellent Inner City integration and cohesion; The event will entertain and engage people living and working on Mountjoy Square in a positive, community enhancing activity; The event will involve the local community using its Park positively, for the purpose of coming together and enjoying ourselves; The event will provide a focus for local community groups and individuals to mix and to network, which will in turn, we hope, result in new positive initiatives and ideas emerging.

Over the last few months, a new chapter is opening in our cultural history, with the creation of WORLD ORCHESTRA MOUNTJOY SQUARE (WOM!)
WOM! is a project open to everyone with a competence and passion for music and/or dance, who is open to exchange and learn from other cultures.
World Orchestra Mountjoy Square engages non-Irish born residents, Irish Travelers and Irish musicians in a joint challenging art venture for the creation of a new local open local community based on music/art exchange.
Our initial target is a main event planned in Mountjoy Square as part of the Cultural Night celebrations, on the 21st of September 2012. This event will include a whole day activity and market. Events and workshops are also planned all over the summer and meetings with musicians already in progress.
It is an important project to improve Mountjoy Square, for all people who live and work on the Square, and those who visit it. Celebrating the rich multicultural diversity of the Square, the Orchestra is made up of people from all over the world. It gains the support and supervision of international Musical Directors who bring their own contribution and experience to this local initiative, through short term workshops. WOM! includes already an ensemble of local musicians from Italy, China, SouthAfrica, US/Ecuador, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Ireland and Spain. We are now an ensemble and we target to become an orchestra and to arrange in an original way music directly coming from musicians. More musicians are welcome to join us. Contact us if you wish to know more and like to get involved and if you like to meet people on the basis of creating music together.
