INSIDE THE WHALE is the new exhibition project by Matteo Pollini that will be presented by FAMA Gallery of Verona starting from 14th January. A journey inside the belly of the whale through the look of three young artists - Gabriele Beveridge, Elena Damiani and Koki Tanaka – to explore and redefine the notion of experience in the contemporary world.
Drawing inspiration from the homonymous essay by George Orwell, written in 1940 – in which the character of Jonah inside the belly of the whale becomes for the writer a metaphor for man’s ideal condition when he wants to escape from any involvement with the world – the exhibition suggests the idea that still today the experience of the real – though with different dynamics – does not take place in a direct way, but, in most cases, through pre-established paths and preconceived schemes. Not only does this attitude imply a standardized approach to the events, but also – and perhaps above all – it gives man the opportunity not to take responsibility for his own actions and deeds.
The artists of the exhibition reflect upon the lack of responsibility which characterize the individual, who prefers to live safely – inside the belly of the whale – instead of becoming aware of the changes of the world and of the societies in which he lives and that cannot but concern him. It is this confidence transmitted by the repetitiveness of everyday gestures and by the immutable context in which they happen that is highlighted and at the same time put into question by the works of art here exhibited, through a “distorted” use of those acts, objects and images that usually make it possible for this situation to continue. Industrially made products, illustrations of scientific and technical books, images from tabloids, set free from their original context, oblige the viewer to revise his or her way of looking at them.
